Movie Research: A Quiet Place (2018)

What conventions of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

A Quiet Place uses suspense, danger, and mystery to create a thrilling experience. The film centers on a family that must live in complete silence to avoid creatures that hunt by sound, which keeps the tension high throughout (thrilling). The concept of survival under extreme circumstances is a common thriller element, and this movie executes it effectively. It also uses a strong sense of dread (unease) to keep the audience on edge. These conventions make it a great example of a modern thriller.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that you liked?

I liked how the movie used silence as a way to build suspense. Every small sound felt important, which kept me on edge while watching. As the creatures have keen hearing and could potentially kill one of the characters for the smallest miscalculation or mistake. I liked the emotional connection between the branch of characters, which made their struggle feel more relatable (realism) and engaging. The mysterious creatures added another layer of tension since they were dangerous but not fully understood (why do they viciously attack anything that makes noise). Effectively the movie balanced suspense and emotional depth.

What conventions of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you and you are thinking of not filming in your final task?

One thing I did not like was the isolated setting, which made the movie feel a bit limited in scope or other outside characters. While it did work for this story (A Quiet Place), I want my final task to take place in a more familiar or relatable setting. The reliance on silence also might not work for a student project because dialogue is helpful for explaining the story in a short film. The mysterious creatures were interesting but required a lot of special effects, which could be challenging to replicate. I think a simpler, more approach would suit our project better.
